About the Founders

Robert Pytela and Jacinto Villanueva co-founded Calico

in 2013. Prior to Calico, both held management po-

sitions at Spring Bioscience, a subsidiary of Hoffman

La-Roche focused at developing antibodies for immunohistochemistry. They joined Spring after Roche acquired Mariposa Bioscience in 2010, the first company that they co-founded together in 2006. Prior to co-founding Mariposa (which means butterfly in Spanish), Robert was the scientific founder of Epitomics, Inc. (founded in 2002) the company that pioneered the development and application of rabbit monoclonal antibodies. Jacinto joined Epitomics as one of its earliest scientists in 2003.  Reem Mahrat also joined Robert and Jacinto in 2013. Like Robert and Jacinto, she was also employed by Epitomics and was one of the earliest and most productive employees at Mariposa. Reem lends her training as a chemical engineer to improving Calico's proprietary antibody development core process as well as other essential bioengineering processes.
